When's the last time you shopped at the mall?

"I haven't been to the mall much," Lansing resident Maria Lockhart said.

Well that's the problem.

"It's been a real struggle for retailers," Tom Scott of the Michigan Retailers Association said. " The last time we had more than half of our retailers reporting improved sales was last October.

According to the International Council of Shopping Centers, 144,000 stores will close by the end of the year. That's a seven percent increase from last year and the biggest jump in 14 years.

Which means you'll see a whole lot more vacant storefronts than ever before.

"I don't think we've seen these kind of vacancies in quite a few years," Scott said.

Scott blames this tough economy.

"We've got some difficult times with gas prices high and staying high and the meltdown in the housing market," he said. "Those are the big contributors."

Large chains or small mom and pop stores, it doesn't matter.

"I'm a waitress so I don't get as many people going out to eat and that affects my shopping," Lockhart said. "I can't get what I want, only what I need."

"I really don't have a shopping habit, all my money goes to my kids," Single mom Jamela McDonald said.

Everyone's feeling the economic effects.

How others look at mich is sad.Unfortunally the truth does hurt.Mich is in the news so often and not alot is said that is good. It's not the people just the way the government has done. There is alot that could be done to improve so many things.Jobs are needed.People are going without alot.Mich gets worse and people need to speak up about the issues. So many things are hurting mich and turning people away.More people are leaving.Jobs are shuting down and it is sad.It is really sad parks bathrooms were in such bad shape?I hope the problem is taken care of.Should of never happened.Even yard sales make money for someone so they have money for other things. How ever the government don't get to collect taxes off them.So why would they care.People buy gas and other things on big sales like this.Helping the economy in small ways. Why let these little things happen? Not enough funds for parks? Why have them open if can't be taken care of them?

I was not impressed with the bathrooms in road side parks on the us 12 sales either. We go every year and I was shocked that knowing so many attend the sales, road side parks are used to stop at,eat, and a bathroom break is always needed that they were in such a mess.Beyond useable.I see why many are not traveling through mich.Parks must be useable. Thanks to the ones having yard sales that kept your prices reasonable. We found a lot of things we needed. We are also sorry your state is in the shape it is.We will probably attend sales next yr,just avoid parks.

This is the reason no new small bussiness are being started.Ones are already failing due to the struggleing people in mich, and the high costs to just try to get buy. Many have lost homes, many jobs have laid off or closed.Who can afford to eat out or do many things like they USA to.Malls are not cheap.Just a dollar store and many just put their money somewhere else. Many can't afford the salavation army or good will stores either. They've raised there prices and wonder why they've lost bussinesss.Small towns with few jobs are not doing well.Oil prices have come down while other prices keep going up?How sad for many.I think since bush has been in office the economy has fail nearly to the point it did just before the last depression.Mich gov has not helped this state at all.Maybe a new bussiness in a big city in another state would be alright but that also depends on so many things.Mich got rid of the single bussiness tax and replaced it with another no better?good bye mich.

Small tourist attractions are also shuting down.Went yard saleing on us 12.From jonesville east.Very little was there any more.Road side state owned parks were also unkept and smelly, bathrooms beyond useable.I'd think knowing how many people would be out, things would of been cleaned for the 3 day event. No wonder less pick mich to vacation in.No wonder bussiness can't stay open,Who has the money to do much shopping.Bargins are found at yard sales and thrift shops. Not small high price stores.Food prices continue to go up.Gas prices aren't dropping fast even if oil per barrel is.Bussiness taxes in mich still is out of hand.Whatever they changed didn't help keep bussinesses open.Jenn and thoes running or should I say ruining this state still get paid.Yard sale shopping save us alot of money toward school clothes. Also other things needed. So thanks yard sales for keeping prices low and offering alot of clothes by bag full sales. The way mich is going it just may see ghosts towns all over.

Expert: Big 3 Failure Would Be Disaster
  • Posted By: BuzzWhy should the Big 3 be bailed out? GM wants to sell off our discontinue the Saturn, which is affordable but has made no mention of discontinuing the Corvette and other less affordable models. If GM wants help have them pick one particular model in each of its lines, i.e. the Lacrosse for Buick, Impala for Chevrolet and the Aura for Saturn. GM is about as impervious as the out-going President is - they just don't get it! I read and sympathize with the line workers who say they can't even afford to buy a new car from the company that they work for - that's pretty sad and certainly doesn't promote company solidarity. Like I've said before, make the Big 3 sell what's sitting at all the dealerships even if they have to take a loss before making another automobile. Why keep making what nobody wants at prices nobody wants to pay?
  • Posted By: BethThe Big 3 failure would be a major disaster - I agree. However, I don't feel that the government or tax payers should bail them out until they have made the same kinds of concessions that citizens, small business, and union members have already made. Begin by severely downsizing the execs and their benefits i.e. luxuries. Times are tough and they should share in the "recession life style" is part of the reason for decreased car sales. I need a newer car badly, but it's not on my shopping list any time soon. They are flying and driving nice cars. Get real! The union members have suffered considerable cuts already including loss of workers, benefits and wages. Make equal cuts in management, wages, and benefits, then look at union members' additional concessions, and financial aide from the government.
  • Posted By: jonlike i said we the workers will and are getting hurt.they gain we lose
  • Posted By: METhank you UAW, if the union would not have barganed until the big 3 couldn't afford it any more we would all be able to afford nice cars. I was in the union before and it definently isnt all peaches and cream. Sure they will fight to get you more but look what it has done.. Workers recieved more then the company could afford and now more may lose everything. Thanks again UAW. It is flat out B.S. that the government will bail out huge corporations but only give the autos a loan. Its all for the politicians gain, main street America has been hurting alot longer then wall street, but wall street affected the politicians pocket so they did something about it. Mr & Mrs politician help us out, cut your pay & benefits.......quit cutting ours.
  • Posted By: LegallyRadTo Explain: If the banks were not bailed out, that would have affected the big 3, and every other business that deals with the banks (show me one that doesn't). This has nothing to do with Bush. Big 3 are very poorly run, and concede too much to organized labor. The bail out will first be essentially worthless since it will amount to a drop in a bucket, and the companies just blow cash. They need to fail to preserve our American capitalistic economy. Chances are only one or two of them will go out of business, but if they properly restructure then they could be saved... restructuring means cutting labor costs and consolidating products. If you want to blame something, it's mostly due to the mortgage crisis which began with Carter and Clinton who refused to allow banks to ensure that people could actually pay for their loans because they felt it might be discrimination. Look where that policy got us. Bush just happens to be in office when their poorly built floor calapsed.
  • Posted By: MicheleI cannot believe that they are not going to bail out the Big 3.Ford is not even sure it is going to need the money. And why do the banks get bailouts with no questions asked but they make the Big 3 jump through hoops of fire and all they want to do is borrow the money...... Reid is an idiot, and doesn't have a clue of how manufacturing works and what the ramifications down the road will be. Including restraurant, stores, and other service industries closing and going out of business due to lack of business. Let's keep America working!
