LIVONIA, Mich. (AP) -- Authorities in suburban Detroit say a 73-year-old woman who recently had surgery was killed in a house fire after helping her teenage grandsons escape.
Livonia fire inspector Dan Lee says the fire started about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. He didn't release the woman's name.
Lee tells The Detroit News the woman was spending the night at her son's house, watching her grandsons.
He says the boys were sleeping in their bedrooms when the woman spotted the fire and alerted them.
Lee says the older teen reached the main floor and tried to extinguish the fire, but the woman and younger teen were unable to get downstairs.
Lee says the woman helped the boy climb out a window and onto a roof but couldn't follow. He says the fire appears accidental.
