LAPEER, Mich. (AP) -- A witness has told a judge during a hearing for the owners of two dogs that fatally mauled a jogger that he had to fire shots at the animals to make them flee.
The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press report that Edward Elmer testified Friday in Lapeer District Court that he was mowing his lawn when the two cane corsos attacked Craig Sytsma July 23 on a Metamora Township road.
Elmer said he told his girlfriend to bring his gun when the dogs initially refused to leave Sytsma.
Sebastiano Quagliata and his wife, Valbona Lucaj, are charged with second-degree murder in Sytsma's death. Their preliminary examination is scheduled to resume Sept. 12. Each is being held on a $500,000 bond.
Metamora Township is about 45 miles northwest of Detroit.
