What's Going Around

It's flu season, and that's what's going around this week.

Physician Assistant Dan Moore at McLaren Greater Lansing Internal Medicine, a partner of McLaren Greater Lansing, is treating patients with the flu.

The symptoms are fever, body aches, headache, chills, sweats, cough, sore throat and runny nose.

Home treatment of the flu involves rest, lots of fluids, using fever reducers like Motrin, Aleve or Tylenol, and using over-the-counter cold medications.

You should see a doctor if your fever won't drop or if you have a condition that may affect your body's ability to fight infection.

Mr. Moore is also treating strep throat.

The hallmark symptoms are: sudden, severe sore throat; pain when swallowing; fever; tender, swollen lymph nodes; fatigue and headache.

Sometimes you'll have white or yellow patches on the tonsils and throat.

Anyone with a sore throat and a fever should see a doctor for antibiotics.

You can take Motrin or Tylenol for fever and pain, gargle with warm salt water, rest and drink fluids.

Strep usually runs its course within three to seven days.

Moore is also seeing dry skin problems.

Those symptoms are skin that looks dehydrated, feels rough and is flaking, as well as skin tightness, itching, redness, and cracks that may bleed.

To treat dry skin, take shorter showers, use gentle cleansers, moisturize when skin is moist, and see a doctor if your skin doesn't improve.

Treating dry skin is important because extensively dry skin can lead to dermatitis, which is a more severe inflammation.
