Dr. Keith Nelson at McLaren Greater Lansing-Williamston Family Medicine is seeing patients with low back strain, caused by shoveling snow.
You'll have stiffness or soreness, swelling, bruising, redness, pain, or weakness. You may not be able to use the muscle.
Go to the emergency room if you have signs of a serious condition. Otherwise, use the PRINCE treatment:
--Protect the area from further injury
--Ice the area
--Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen
--Compress the area
--Elevate it whenever possible
If you don't feel better after using the PRINCE treatment for 48 to 72 hours, see your doctor.
You can prevent muscle strain by stretching daily and warming up before doing activity.
