TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) -- Health officials are warning people against swimming at Keith J. Charters Traverse City State Park's beaches because of E. coli bacteria levels.
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports (http://bit.ly/1lGkE3L ) the recommendation was made following tests Wednesday at the park.
Tom Buss, the director of environmental health and animal control for the Grand Traverse County Health Department, says officials don't want people swimming above the waist with their heads in the water. He says it's OK to wade or fish in the water.
Buss says he's hopeful that follow-up testing will show E. coli readings back to safe levels.
The Grand Traverse County Health Department's weekly beach report says other county beaches along Grand Traverse Bay are safe for swimming.
