DETROIT (AP) -- A water main break in Detroit has caused the closure of a busy intersection on the city's west side.

The Detroit News says police are requesting that motorists avoid the area.

According to WWJ-AM, water poured out of the pipe for several hours before a crew was able to shut off the valve around 8 a.m. Friday.

Darnell Stewart works in the area. He tells the radio station the water is "gushing, it's not bubbling."

It's not uncommon for a main to burst when temperatures drop. It was about 15 to 20 degrees in Detroit overnight.

Detroit Water and Sewerage Department spokesman Bill Johnson tells the Detroit Free Press the break is one of three or four in the area. He says the other line breaks are smaller.
