MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) -- A $500 reward is being offered in Marquette after a vandal put red paint on a 115-year-old statute of the Rev. Jacques Marquette.
Emily Lewis of the Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee says the statue's face is red and there are streaks on the robe. The bronze statue of the famous French priest and explorer was erected in Marquette in the Upper Peninsula in 1897.
Lewis tells The Mining Journal (http://bit.ly/RDDJl1) that it will be a "delicate process" to clean the statue. The city recently gave the restoration committee control of the statue in order to restore it.
