LANSING (WILX) - Unemployment figures are showing a small increase from Janaury to February in mid-Michigan. In the Lansing-East Lansing region the unemployment rate increased from 6.1% in January to 6.6% in February. That is a still better than a year ago, when the unemployment rate for Lansing-East Lansing was at 7.8%

In the Jackson area unemployment rate for February was 8.5%, up from 8% in January. Jackson had an unemployment rate of 9.3% in February 2013.

Seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates in February increased in 15 of the state's 17 major labor market regions, according to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget.
"Unemployment rates in Michigan's local areas were elevated in February, which is normal for the winter months," said Jason Palmer, director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information & Strategic Initiatives. "Throughout the state, payroll job totals in the winter are typically at their lowest levels of the year in a number of industry sectors including construction, trade, transportation and utilities, and leisure and hospitality services."
