ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- The University of Michigan has given an honorary degree to the president of its in-state rival.
Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon received an honorary doctorate of laws degree during Michigan's December commencement Sunday in Ann Arbor. University of Michigan Regent Andrew Richner made the presentation.
Simon has headed up the East Lansing school since 2005.
National Public Radio correspondent and host Michele Norris-Johnson also received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree and delivered the winter commencement address.
The ceremony came two days after Michigan State University gave similar recognition to University of Michigan's president. Coleman received an honorary doctorate of laws in a ceremony on the East Lansing campus.
