WILLIAMSTON, Mich. (AP) -- Schools and sports teams sell cookie dough, popcorn, coupon books, even grave blankets. How about scrap metal?

The marching band at Williamston High School, near Lansing, is collecting scrap on Oct. 26-27. The Lansing State Journal says band boosters raised more than $10,000 during a similar effort a year ago.

Some of that money went for coats. This time the band hopes to raise $5,000 to replace uniforms that are more than 20 years old.

The Williamston band will accept all kinds of metal, including wheel rims, gold, silver, coins, broken jewelry, necklaces and certain class rings. Junk cars are OK, too.

Band boosters president Vicki Schneider says it's a good reason to clean out your drawers.
