Traverse City Mayor Michael Estes has been sentenced to 18 months of probation after pleading guilty to driving while impaired.
District Judge Michael Stepka also fined Estes $800 Tuesday and ordered him to perform three days of community service. The judge says the probation period is six months longer than it ordinarily would have been because Estes was convicted in 1994 of reckless driving after a crash that involved alcohol.
The 63-year-old was arrested Oct. 23 after attending a candidates' forum. A breath test recorded a blood-alcohol content of 0.12 percent, exceeding the 0.08 percent legal limit for driving.
He originally was charged with operating while intoxicated but pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor count in November. He asked the public's forgiveness and was re-elected the next day.
