ALLENDALE, Mich. (AP) -- A West Michigan student who settled a lawsuit with Grand Valley State University over her right to keep a guinea pig in her campus apartment has been lauded by an advocacy group.

MLive.com reports that the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan has given Kendra Velzen its annual Outstanding Effort by an Individual award.

The group says Velzen was honored for promoting "equal housing opportunity for university students throughout the country."

Velzen sued Grand Valley State University last year, saying the school violated federal housing rules. She said the guinea pig helped her cope with physical and emotional challenges.

The Allendale school reached a $40,000 settlement earlier this year with Velzen and the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan, which supported her efforts. Grand Valley State denied improper action.
