Lansing, Mich. (WILX) A bill introduced by Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, last week would allow strip searches for misdemeanor charges and would eliminate the need for probable cause.
Senate Bill 958 would bring Michigan jails in line with federal prisons and Ingham Co. Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth said it would ensure more safety for officers on the job.
"Just because a person is arrested on a misdemeanor doesn't mean they haven't committed a felony elsewhere," Wriggelsworth said.
"You don't have an expectation to privacy when coming into jail."
Opponents argue the new bill is unnecessary and an invasion of personal rights.
WILX's Josh Sidorowicz will have more on the new proposal tonight on News 10 at 6.
