Springport, MI - The Springport High School Football team wanted to be the first team in Mid-Michigan to practice this year.
How are they doing that? By starting their two-a-day practices at midnight, then gearing up for round two at 7 a.m. this morning.
The seniors on the squad came up with the idea to be the first team practicing today, the first official day of practice set for football teams by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
The JV and Varsity teams spent the night in the school gym after practicing at midnight.
The coaching staff cooked breakfast for all the players, around 60 athletes from grades 9 through 12.
This is all kicking off an important week for the team.
"We'll have two a days the rest of the week, and we'll cap it off Saturday morning with what we call it our 'Blue and White' game," says Head Coach Matt Schwartzkopf.
The "Blue and White" game is an inter-squad scrimmage that gives the coaches and players a chance to try out different line-ups.
The JV and Varsity squads are practicing together, something new for Springport.
Coach Swartzkopf tells News 10 that despite losing a lot of veteran players, the team is excited for this upcoming season.
