THREE OAKS, Mich. (AP) -- Authorities say four people are dead following a house fire in a small southwestern Michigan village.
Berrien County Sheriff L. Paul Bailey says the blaze in Three Oaks started about 5 a.m. Thursday.
Names of the victims haven't been released, but officials describe them as an elderly couple, their granddaughter and the granddaughter's boyfriend.
A dog and three cats also were killed. No working smoking detectors were found.
The state fire marshal's office is investigating.
Bailey calls the fire and deaths a "tragedy" and that many people in the small community of about 1,800 people will "be grieving."
Three Oaks is just north of the state line with Indiana, about 20 miles northwest of South Bend, Ind., and 95 miles southwest of Grand Rapids.
