LANSING (WILX)- Tax season has begun, and how do you know you are getting the most money back? Saturday the Asset Independence Coalition hosted their 3rd annual Show-Me-The-Money-Day, a day dedicated to giving financial education to those who need it most.

Taking a class on money management, loans, or homeownership, it's the little bits of advice that help get you in the right direction says soon-to-be first homeowner Courtney Rynicki.

"I came here to learn about different resources and I learned more than I thought I was going to," said Rynicki.

Rynicki says she's been looking at buying a home for a while now, but didn't know what resources she could turn to. At the financial workshop she found her answers.

"To find out there's so many helpful resources and different programs to help you get through the process and support you it makes you feel a lot more comfortable," said Rynicki.

Need a tax break? You might qualify for an earned income tax credit just by making under $50,000 a year, just ask your tax accountant. Don't have one? City treasurer Antonia Kraus says that shouldn't be a problem.

"We have a program called the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program or VITA. What VITA does is it prepares income tax for families that make 47 thousand dollars or less and it's done for free,"

If you qualify for the VITA free tax return all you have to do is call 2-1-1 and they will help you set up a meeting at one of their centers in the Lansing area that could be as soon as next week.

The financial education workshop reaches out to a majority of the cities population . In the city of Lansing 25% of the people are living below the poverty level according to state records. It's about finding those people a way out of their financial problems says Kraus.

"It's always about financial stability. It's not about changing someone's job but it's changing how money is used and how to use it more effectively," said Kraus.

The Asset Independence Coalition will be having another workshop at the end of April. That workshop will be called "Money Smart Week" and will be held at the downtown city library April 20th-27th.
