What does it take to convince people to stand in line in below-freezing temperatures?

For Noelle Arambula, who was first in line at Younkers at the Lansing Mall, there's a thrill in getting the deals.

"It's just the excitement that everyone gets that you have to stand out here," she said. "It's just the way it is, it's Black Friday and you want to get the sales first."

Some people waited in the line at the Delta Township Best Buy for hours Thursday, while others--like Carol Carlisle-Bradford--pitched tents for days.

"I brought a heater and put it in there so we could stay warm," she said.

Carlisle-Bradford said Black Friday shopping is a sport for her. She had been waiting in the line since Monday and said she wouldn't have it any other way.

"I get great deals and that excites me," she said.

But for those, like Jody Pung and her mother Pat Kline, who weren't much for pitching a tent or standing around in the cold, they waited it out in their cars instead.

"We are staying warm, we are making our game plan, and then we are heading to the next store," Pung said.

The mother-daughter team has been Black Friday shopping for at least 10 years and they say it's become about much more than just getting a good deal.

My daughter and I get together on Thursdays, we go through all the ads, pick out the stores, pick out what we want to get and then head out," Kline said.

Macy's, Target, Kohl's, JCPenney and Sears opened Thursday at 8pm. Meridian Mall and the Lansing Mall also opened at 8pm with most stores planning to stay open throughout the night until late Friday night.

This was the first year Macy's has ever been open on Thanksgiving.
