Senate Panel OKs Medicaid Bill

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Legislation expanding government health insurance coverage to hundreds of thousands of low-income adults in Michigan has moved forward in the state Senate.

A Senate committee on Wednesday approved a revised bill more than a month after the Republican-led chamber refused to vote at the request of Republican Gov. Rick Snyder. The panel also approved two alternative plans backed by conservative senators.

It remains unclear how the full Senate will react when asked to vote on Medicaid expansion at the end of August.

Medicaid expansion is an option under the federal health care law. It's supported by the medical and insurance lobbies and most business interests but is opposed by conservative activists.
