Jackson teen Timothy Johnson updated the community about his Eagle Scout project to build a memorial for fallen police and firefighters Wednesday.

Johnson gave a presentation on his memorial project at Wednesday's annual Police memorial put on by the Jackson Police Department. Several officers from the department, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police killed in the line of duty were honored during the ceremony at Bucky Harris Park.

We first told you about Johnson's plans for a permanent memorial last August, when he was trying to raise money for it. As of Wednesday, he's raised $7,000 through donations and fundraisers.

Johnson tells us the memorial will be six feet tall and five feet wide and include the names of fallen police and firefighters from Jackson and the surrounding area. "I decided to build this project because they need the recognition," says Johnson. "I didn't think they had enough recognition for what they've done for us, which is a lot." Johnson is also passionate about the project because he has a lot of family and friends who are police officers or firefighters. He also attends the Career Center for firefighting.

The memorial will be placed in Blackman Park, on the corner of South Jackson Street and West Michigan Avenue. He's waiting to install the memorial until the demolition work is done at the old Consumers building in downtown Jackson. Stay with News 10 as we continue to follow the progress of this project.
