GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Officials say an erroneous message that Grand Rapids Public Schools were closed for the day due to the weather happened because of a technical error.
District spokesman John Helmholdt told TV stations WOOD and WZZM that classes are in session Friday.
Helmholdt initially said the website was hacked. He later told The Grand Rapids Press that a technical error triggered the false closing message, which was discovered between 6 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. Friday after being up possibly as long as 30 minutes.
The message was removed and families were notified that school was open by email, telephone calls and social media.
Earlier this week, the Grand Rapids area saw whiteout conditions on roads due to winds and blowing snow. On Friday, it was bitterly cold.
