FLINT, Mich. (AP) -- The public school district in Flint has laid off 12 teachers, three non-teaching staff and five paraprofessionals.
The cuts were made Wednesday by the Flint district's board of education. The Flint Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1ymHtPI ) six other teachers were cut when their recalls expired.
School board members say that the cuts come from financial necessity as the school district tries to dig out of a $10.4 million deficit. Interim Superintendent Larry Watkins says that the board should expect more layoffs before the end of the month.
