LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Events are being held in Michigan to remember the many lives lost a year ago at a school in Connecticut.

Saturday is the anniversary of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six adults were killed.

The names of about 40 Michigan residents killed by gun violence were read at Union Missionary Baptist Church in Lansing. The Lansing State Journal reports that Mayor Virg Bernero was among the roughly 90 who attended.

In Ann Arbor, the mayor and others were remembering Sandy Hook on the steps of the federal building.

More events were planned at Detroit city hall and at Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell, a proponent of gun control, was scheduled to be among the speakers.
