Qu'ran Burning Pastor Visits Lansing
Florida pastor Terry Jones' visit to Lansing is costing the city thousands of dollars, according to Mayor Virg Bernero. They've brought in extra Lansing police officers, which will mean overtime. It's all to keep people safe given Jones' tendency to draw a lot of attention.

Last time anti-Muslim pastor Terry Jones was in Michigan, it took riot police to keep the peace. That's why tonight State Police were ready for anything.

"If their intent is to come here and cause a disturbance in an illegal manner we'll deal with that immediately," said F. Lt. Chris Kelenske.

But local Islamic leaders don't want a repeat of Dearborn.

"The overwhelming majority of Muslims do feel passionate about the Qu'ran. They do feel passionate about their faith. They're also passionate about the America and the U.S. constitution. It's what brought us here," said Abdalmajid Katranji of the Greater Lansing Islamic Society.

Katranji and other Muslims may tolerate Jones' rhetoric but that doesn't mean they like it.

"They're hurtful, no question, because it comes from a very one-sided lopsided skewed view," said Katranji.

People of all faiths were gathered across time during Jones' rally at Lansing's Greek Orthodox Church to stand against what Jones is preaching.

"Hopefully by the lack of attention, eventually his 15 minutes of fame will run out and he'll just be a footnote in history," said Katranji.

A footnote, maybe, but one that took major planning on the state and local level.

"We've been working with our partners in the area, collaborating on our operational plans ensuring that not only do people have the ability to demonstrate and counter-demonstrate peacefully while maintaining our constitutional rights, by also make sure everyone is safe here at the Capitol," said Kelenske.

Most State Police troopers out here have been pulled from being on duty in other locations to minimize overtime, he added.
