KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -- Kalamazoo police say a civil disturbance broke out in a crowd of about 2,000 in a Western Michigan University student neighborhood, with some people fighting and throwing bottles and rocks at officers seeking to restore order.
Police say officers used tear gas to disperse the crowd Saturday afternoon. They say no injuries were reported.
The Department of Public Safety says in a statement that the crowd grew out of a student event called "House Crawl." Police say it began peacefully but say some participants began drinking alcohol in public, making excess noise and fighting.
The department says Western Michigan University police also helped quell the disturbance.
Police say the disorder left streets littered with broken glass and cans, and say some furniture was set on fire.
