Parts of Michigan's UP at Risk for Wildfires

ESCANABA, Mich. (AP) -- Officials say some parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula are at risk for wildfires due to dry conditions
.
The Daily Press of Escanaba reports the fire danger has been high for several days this week in the Delta County area, keeping officials on alert. Permits aren't being issued for open burning, which likely won't be allowed until significant rain falls.

A half-acre of wooded area near Escanaba was scorched when a burning pit got out of control Wednesday. No injuries were reported.

The risk of fire comes as some other parts of the Upper Peninsula deal with continued flooding as temperatures warm and snow melts. The National Weather Service reports flooding along the Michigamme River in Marquette County and the Sturgeon River in Houghton County.
