Six schools in Jackson County have been designated as Mi-Heart Safe Schools meaning they are prepared to respond to cardiac emergencies. They are Northwest Education Center, Northwest Elementary, Northwest High School, Northwest Operations Building, Parnall Elementary and RW Kidder Middle School.
Thirty-six other schools in the state also were recognized for the achievement. To get it, at least 10 percent of the staff and half of coaches must be trained in CPR and know how to use a defibrillator. The school must have a written response plan for medical emergencies too. Between 19-99 and 2009, 246 school-age kids died from sudden cardiac arrest.
