Smoking pot for pleasure could one day be legal here in Michigan, if one Detroit lawmaker gets his way. Senator Coleman Young has introduced a bill legalizing the recreational use of marijuana.
Young's legislation would put a tax on marijuana sold in Michigan, and revenue would be used for education and other needs.
The bill would allow residents to legally have up to an ounce of pot and five marijuana plants.
The senator says finally legalizing pot would allow police to focus on more violent crimes, instead of busting someone for marijuana. If this bill is approved, Michigan would join other states, including Colorado and Oregon, where recreational marijuana use is legal.
The bill has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. We'll let you know if any action is taken.
