Mt. Brighton Ski Resort a "New Mountain" This Year

BRIGHTON (WILX)-- The snow is a welcome sight for Michigan ski hills, especially one that just got a multi-million dollar upgrade.

Since 1960, Mt. Brighton Ski Area has been one of the legendary family winter destinations. With recent $10 million dollar improvements, it's almost a whole new scene. The improvements and new snow is already drawing people in.

"With all this snow we've been getting I just seemed like a great time to pull the kids out of school for a day," said customer Nancy Livingston.

Showing her kids how to ski just like her parents taught her, Livingston was pleasantly surprised by all the upgrades this year.

"It was real nice to see the magic carpets instead of the tow ropes."

"All new boxes and rails for the park, new grooming machines, and the whole inside is totally redone. It's remarkable," said James Castle, employee at Mt. Brighton.

It was a complete overhaul after Vail Resorts took over ownership last December. The resort now has new chairlifts, terrain parks, and state of the art snow making system.

It officially opened for season on Saturday.

"So far I've seen a huge improvement on people that I normally see here," said Castle.

"A lot of people are spreading the word, telling their friends to come out here. It's been really good business so far," said Nicholas Julet, employee at Mt. Brighton.

The snow that came over the weekend has made this an ideal opening week.

"It left a bunch of powder, I would say six inches. After they got done grooming it came out perfect," said Castle.

Not all of the runs are open yet, but hopefully with a little more help from mother nature and the snow machines, everything could be open next week. But for the Livingston family as long as the brand new Children's Ski Center is open, they say they're set.

"It's great it gives the kids a lot more control when they're learning. Plus there's no big hunks of snow," said Livingston.

Brighton's downtown area was one of the main reasons Vail picked the resort for the upgrades.
If you've never tried skiing or snowboarding, there's a great affordable package for beginners which includes lessons, equipment, and a ski pass at several ski areas around the state.
