LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- The Michigan Office of the Great Lakes says more than $500,000 is being awarded for projects seeking to protect and enhance the Great Lakes.

The office says the Coastal Zone Management grants announced this week go to 10 communities, nonprofits, state agencies and universities.

The new funding aims to enhance public access in Michigan to areas along the Great Lakes, encourage stewardship through beach cleanup programs, promote public safety at beaches and support local and regional waterfront redevelopment plans.

The money is provided in part by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A full list of projects is posted online.
