Mom Helping Moms Breastfeed at Baby Cafe

HOLT (WILX)-- There's a new place for moms to breastfeed and mingle.

"Baby Cafe" in Holt is one of the only drop-in breastfeeding centers in the state, and is getting moms and children of all ages latched on to breastfeeding.

"I've had every problem in the book. It was hard because my family doesn't breastfeed so I didn't have them to go to for support," said Patricia Naretta, breastfeeding mom.

Without family to turn to, Naretta relies on getting support from other breastfeeding moms at Baby Cafe.

"I didn't know I was going to make it past the first six weeks as bad as it was."

With support she made it longer than six weeks. Her son Luke is now 11 months old and still breastfeeding.
At the "cafe" Naretta can meet with other moms, or even a lactation consultant to help with whatever questions or worries she might have.

"They've been an amazing support for both of us."

"I just really just get to know the mom and form a relationship with them. I'm another mom who's breastfed so we can relate," said Stacy Carstensen, lactation counselor at Baby Cafe.

Carstensen says it can be as simple as sharing experiences.

"When I had to nurse my son and kids were walking by I thought I shouldn't be doing this. They (parents) are going to have to explain what I'm doing."

But moms don't have to be self-conscious in the support group.

Approximately 75% of all women in the U.S. start breastfeeding. Of those moms 60% do no reach their own goals, according to Expectant Parents Organization.
The idea is support groups will help change that statistic for the better.

"I'm still breastfeeding and going strong almost a year later. You need someone to talk to, somewhere to go," said Lindsay Fisher-Collie. breastfeeding mom.

The cafe is one of only four licensed drop-in centers in the state. They provide everything from a comfortable environment to breast pumps, free of charge.

"It was informal I felt very comfortable with him," said Fisher-Collie.

"Baby Cafe" is held every Wednesday 10:00 am -12:00 (noon) at the Lansing Area Church of Christ in Holt.
Expectant moms are welcome as well.
