Michigan State Police Offer Safety Tips When Entering Water

Posted: Wed 6:19 PM, Jul 04, 2012

As a member of the Michigan State Police Underwater Recovery Team, Trooper Brent Matsumoto has traveled across the state recovering the bodies of those who have died in water-related incidents.

According to him, there are a number of reasons why people drown.

"Panic, fatigue, medical emergencies," said Matsumoto. "Sometimes people don't drink enough water and end up cramping up. They panic, fatigue sets in and, next thing you know, they become a victim."

Matsumoto says there are many ways to avoid accidents like wearing a life jacket or swimming with a friend, but what he says is most important, is knowing your own limits.
