The Michigan House Health Policy Committee is expected to take up a package of bills that's pushing to place further regulations on abortion clinics among other changes.

"It has to do with abortion practices, inspections, licensing, things in that regard as well as other elements of how women interact with the abortion industry," said Ed Rivet from Right to Life of Michigan.

Rivet argues it's simply to put in better practices, but Planned Parenthood believes it's much more than that.

"It's very clear that the intent of this legislation is to shut down health centers that perform abortions, that it is absolutely targeted at Planned Parenthood as well as other folks that provide women's reproductive health services," said Meghan Groen, director of government relations at Planned Parenthood.

The bills are also aimed at preventing coercive abortions and make it a crime to abort a fetus after 20 weeks of prenancy.

"It's something that the state legislature has no business being in. This is between a woman and her doctor and her family," Groen said.

Rep. Mike Shirkey, R-Clark Lake, is in support of the bills and is not afraid to voice a strong opinion.

"This [abortion] is nothing short of infanticide. Until we completely eliminate abortions in Michigan and completely defund Planned Parenthood, we have work to do," said Rep. Shirkey.

Right to Life will not say whether they will join the representative in support of his final goal. However, Rivet did emphasize that the bills as they are written now do not prevent a woman's right to seek out abortion services. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion.
