PENINSULA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan will buy land on Old Mission Peninsula with $2.5 million from the Michigan Natural Resource trust fund.
WPBN-TV reports the state Department of Natural Resources plans to turn the Old Moorings Place into a new boat launch, leaving Haserot Beach just for swimming.
The DNR plans to buy the property by the end of the year. It says the changes could help alleviate congestion at other boat launches and create more boating and business opportunities.
Peninsula resident John Jacobs says the project will bring too much car and boat traffic, changing the "basic nature of the village."
Old Mission Inn owner Angie Jensen says she supports the project because the current Haserot boat launch is "an accident waiting to happen."
