Michigan Children's Authors Get National Attention with Open Carry Book

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- A children's book written by two Michigan men has gained national attention for its storyline about parents who openly carry pistols.

MLive Grand Rapids reports that "My Parents Open Carry" was featured on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" and Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report."

The book was written by Brian Jeffs and Nathan Nephew in 2011, shortly after they co-founded an open carry organization in Michigan. The men wanted the book to be a starting point for the discussion of guns.

Jeffs says he and Nephew hoped the book would eventually receive the attention of liberals.

Nephew says he doesn't mind the jokes that have been made about him and his book, and he welcomes the publicity.
