LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan's largest teachers union is backing Democrat Mark Schauer in the governor's race.
The Michigan Education Association's endorsement Tuesday is no shock, but Schauer's campaign says it's hoping the relatively early announcement will boost his momentum heading into the 2014 election year.
Republican Gov. Rick Snyder's campaign is currently airing a TV commercial touting his first term.
Democrats want to make education a big issue in the race. The MEA, Schauer and teachers plan to hold a late-afternoon news conference at a Lansing elementary school.
Schauer's father was a high school science teacher in Howell.
