BELDING, Mich. (AP) -- Authorities say a West Michigan officer has shot and killed a suspect who earlier shot out the window of a police cruiser.
According to state police 1st Lt. Kevin Sweeney, the man fired shots about 5:12 a.m. Saturday outside the Belding police department, shattering the window of a department vehicle.
An officer working inside heard the gunshots, went outside and saw the man getting into a van. Sweeney says the officer followed the van and called for backup. A state trooper arrived to assist, and the officers later stopped the van.
Sweeney says the man exited the van and began shooting at the patrol cars.
Police say the Belding officer returned fire, killing the suspect, whose name hasn't yet been released.
