Delhi Township - Fire crews are called to Orchid Stealth Orthopedics in Delhi Township to contain a cobalt fire. Not so much smoke as steam rose from the barrel of the combustible metal filings, as firefighters poured water over the hot metal. The Fire Department was called shortly before 12:30PM to the facility on North Cedar Street, near Edgar Road. News 10 is told that typically a barrel fire like this would just burn out, but this barrel had more material than usual.
The facility was temporarily shut down. The building's air compressors had to be turned off so smoke and steam would not blow through the rooms.
No one was hurt.
Orchid Stealth uses cobalt and titanium among other metals to make parts for medical orthopedic implants.
