Meridian Township's board discussed a revamped ordinance Tuesday night that would make it illegal to discriminate based on sexual orientation when it comes to housing in the township.
Meridian would join East Lansing, Lansing, Delhi and Delta Townships, among several other communities with similar ordinances already on the books.
The board also discussed putting employment protection in the ordinance language as well.
Several members of the community came out Tuesday night to show their support for the proposed ordinance.
"I think it's important for our community, even though Meridian Township is already so open and vibrant and cosmopolitan I think it's important to send a message that they want to support gay and transgendered people in housing and employment," said Justin Lippi.
Enforcement issues and making sure the ordinance would lay out clear definitions to include sexual identity and expression were also on the top of the list of concerns for board members.
No final decisions have been made yet, and it could be a couple months before anything is officially voted upon.
