Twenty-four-year-old 2nd-year MSU medical student Andrew David Thompson was in an East Lansing courtroom Wednesday.

He was getting arraigned on three more felony charges for animal killings prosecutors say happened at an apartment on MAC Avenue in August and September of last year. Despite his attorney's wishes, the judge granted a $500,000 bond.

"I believe this courts decision was excessive, inappropriate, much higher than warranted given the charges," Thompson's Attorney George Zulakis said.

Thompson already was given a $100,000 bond in Ingham County on 10 felony charges for dog killings prosecutors believe happened at an apartment complex in Meridian Township from October to the present.

An anonymous tip led animal control here a few weeks ago.

"That's where they discovered a dog injured, but still living," Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings said. "That leads to the animal cruelty charge misdemeanor he's also charged with."

Dunnings said Thompson knowingly killed all of the dogs he purchased during this time frame, but wouldn't give details. His neighbors in Meridian Township wouldn't say much, only that he was quiet and kept to himself.

News Ten did get in touch with some of Thompson's classmates at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at MSU, but they were very reluctant to say anything, one said he was too uncomfortable to talk about the case. It's clear there are still several questions.

According to Facebook, Thompson is from Arizona, graduated from USC in 2009 with honors in biochemistry. He spent time at Boston University's School of medicine before coming to MSU. His attorney said Wednesday, his client has no prior criminal record and plans to plead not guilty, then hopefully resume his path toward a medical career.

Preliminary hearings are scheduled for next week.
