The normally heated Wolverine-Spartan rivalry cooled a bit as Michigan State University presented University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman with an honorary doctorate of laws degree for her leadership nationally on higher education issues.
Coleman spoke Friday afternoon during advanced-degree ceremonies on the East Lansing campus, telling graduates to be supportive of all public higher education institutions.
Coleman said she also is "deeply troubled by the evaporation of state aid" for colleges and universities.
At its December commencement, which takes place Sunday, the University of Michigan plans to give an honorary degree to Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon. She's to get the honorary doctorate of laws degree during the event in Ann Arbor.
Saturday speakers at Michigan State University include Chrysler Group LLC's CEO Sergio Marchionne.
