Lansing Community College and Jackson College celebrated Constitution Day with a panel on voting rights.

Constitution Day started in 2004, after Congress passed a law designating Sept. 9 as a day for citizens to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution and learn more about it.

Monday's discussion centered around the recent state efforts to change voter laws.

"I hope people have a chance to think about voting rights and think about the importance of the right to vote," says Mark Thomas, a political science professor at LCC. "That's really the main goal, and to think about it in terms of our primary document, the U.S. Constitution."

The panel included Matt Davis, a former Mich. Republican Party spokesperson, and Mark Brewer, the former chair of the Mich. Democratic Party, as well as Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum.
