Brad Christtofferson was ordering new t-shirts for his employees, when he was reminded that october is breast cancer awareness month, the month to "think pink."
"A couple of the guys asked for pink t-shirts, and I said, okay we can get some pink t-shirts. By the end of the day, the pink t-shirt order was more than the regular order," said Brad Christtofferson, Owner of Outdoor Specialties.
And requests for the shirts kept coming in, over 50 in just a few days from friends and family members of outdoor specialties employees. And the idea... it came from this group of tough looking guys, who told me breast cancer has touched their lives.
"I mean I have family that have survived it and that haven't, so I think real men wear pink, so you've got to represent," said Nick Trent, an employee of Outdoor Specialties.
The employees wear their pink while mowing lawns and blowing leaves to show customers that they too want to increase awareness about breast cancer. And with every shirt that is purchased, a donation is made to the American Cancer Society's making strides against breast cancer fund.
"Every dollar makes a difference. A dollar can help fund a ride to treatment for somebody completely free. It can make sure that we have someone staffed 24-7 on our help line, so every dollar makes a difference," said Kelly Knupfer, American Cancer Society.
Outdoor specialties is just one of many local businesses thinking pink this fall. for their fifth year, the MSU bakers are making pink bagels they call "Gwen's Bagels," in honor of an employee's mother. It seems you can't walk out your door or look out your window, without seeing pink in mid-michigan this fall.
"There's just a lot of businesses getting involved. Everyone wants to spread the awareness, so I think Michigan is special that way that they're getting pink out and getting the awareness out earlier," said Knupfer.
Gwen's Bagels are sold on-campus daily and at the MSU Bakers farm stand on Thursdays. A dollar from every order is donated to the American Cancer Society. And of course, Capital Area Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is October 26th.
