UPDATED STORY: Lansing Police Investigating Neighborhood Shooting

By  |

Lansing police say a man armed with a .762 assault-style rifle may have left the area, though they continue to search for him.

A canine track did not yield results, police say.

A state police helicopter is flying over the area above MLK, Riddle Street, Kalamazoo, Chelsea, and Michigan Avenue, searching for the shooter.

"It's just thick terrain so we want to double check," said Lansing Police Sgt. Kevin Schlagel. "To make sure with their airborne technology that we didn't miss either the accused or any victims that are in some thick bushes back there."

Police got several reports of shots fired in a neighborhood off Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. Officers went house-to-house on the 1100 block of Chelsea Avenue. They haven't found anyone injured, but did find bullet holes on at least one house and one vehicle.

"Right now I think with the number of officers we have out here right now, this scene is safe," said Schlagel.

Police blocked off the side streets in the area surrounded by Riddle Street, Michigan Avenue, Kalamazoo Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

Neighbors say flashing lights are nothing new in the neighborhood, but they rarely have seen this large of a police response.

"This right here is a lot," said Clarence Walker, who lives in the neighborhood. "They don't usually do this. So this is extreme so I'm really trying to figure out what's really going on."

Walker said he's tired of hearing gunshots in his neighborhood.

"This has gotta stop," he said. "We've got to get the guns out of these little kids hands, man because these kids are ruthless out here now."
