LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- A Michigan State Police report says that six people died in Labor Day weekend crashes on state streets and highways. That's half the toll of last year's holiday period.

State police released results of their preliminary count Wednesday. They say the six deaths happened in six separate crashes. They say one of the six victims was wearing a seat belt, and alcohol was a known factor in one crash.

The state reports there were 12 crash deaths during the 2011 Labor Day holiday period.

State police count holiday weekend crashes from 6 p.m. Friday through midnight Monday.
