LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Kalamazoo unveils a memorial garden and bronze bust this week to honor a police officer who was killed in a shootout in the western Michigan city.
The ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the north end of the Kalamazoo Mall.
MLive.com says a 7-foot bust of Zapata is the centerpiece of the garden.
Thirty five-year-old Zapata was a 10-year veteran of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety with three children.
He died April 18, 2011 as he and other officers answered a report of shots fired.
Last month, Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation to name part of Interstate 94 in Kalamazoo County for Zapata.
