Judges Stay Ruling on Emergency Manager Ballot Measure

The Michigan appeals court says a challenge to the state's emergency manager law should be placed on the fall ballot, but it is suspending the decision and wants more judges to take a look.

In an unusual move, a three-judge panel said Friday that it must follow a legal precedent and rule in favor of critics of the emergency manager law. But at the same time, the court believes that precedent was wrongly set back in 2002.

The court says the dispute over Michigan's emergency manager law should now be considered by other judges.

Opponents of the law submitted enough signatures to get it on the ballot. But the State Board of Canvassers refused to approve it after complaints about the font size on the petition.

The font size controversy was the topic of an exclusive News 10 investigation reported by Liam Martin.
