A judge has ordered a mid-Michigan city to stop enforcing an ordinance that bans collection bins for clothes and other used items.
Planet Aid attorney Daniel Dalton says a federal judge in Grand Rapids made the temporary order against St. Johns on Tuesday. Planet Aid says its free speech rights and other legal protections have been violated.
St. Johns is 25 miles north of Lansing. It passed an ordinance against bins in January, saying the small community wants to prevent blight.
Planet Aid had two bins in St. Johns that were removed as nuisances 15 months ago. It collects clothes and other used goods that are typically sold to help people in developing countries.
Planet Aid is based in Elkridge, Maryland, but has Michigan operations in Romulus.
