Jennifer Swanson says violence has always been an issue in the Jackson schools her son has attended: "When he first started at Parkside, I was really worried. The year before he started there, a young lady was stabbed at school."

So she's thrilled to know some of the remaining money from a bond issue passed two years ago might go to pay for surveillance cameras at her son's current middle school, Parkside and also at his old elementary school, Frost. "They do a lot of picking, a lot of fighting, also I think it's a great idea to put surveillance cameras in," explained Swanson.

Jackson's two high schools, along with their alternative school, already started using these cameras. Superintendent Dan Evans says he's already seen improvement in managing students with them. He also believes the cameras are a way to prepare for the future. "As face recognition software and things come into the picture, and you don't know how fast that will happen, you'll be able to know who's in your building, you may even be able to take attendance," explained Evans.

The district keeps a strong watch on the video; he says only a few staff members have access to the footage for the sake of privacy and students' security.

Jennifer trusts the staff filming her son, on the condition he will be safer than ever before: "It's a good idea just to make sure that they stay safe and everything is going the way it's supposed to go when they're at school."

The meeting is Monday at Frost Elementary school. It starts at 6:00 p.m.
