Eleven kids from Michigan are in Washington, D.C. this week for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity--- the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
One of them happens to be a 13-year-old from Jackson County.
Sean Hickey, a seventh grader at Grass Lake Middle School, will compete against 280 other students from across the U.S. and other other countries like Ghana, Japan and South Korea.
Hickey is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and competes in Mathcounts competitions. He also likes to play basketball, baseball and football and plays the piano and alto saxophone in the school band.
Tuesday's competition is all computer-based. The preliminaries will be held Wednesday. Semi-finals are set for Thursday morning, while the championship will air Thursday night at 8pm, live on ESPN.
